Is drinking too much soda can result in osteoporosis? In a study about
people in any age who drink too much soda, shown that the level of broken
and fractured bones are higher than people who do not drink soda.
For years, scientists have been suspicious that caffeine, phosphorus
and carbonic acid in softdrink can influence the absorption of calcium.
However, another specific study reveals that there is no relationship
between soda and the absorption of calcium. Caffeine is one element inside
soda which has direct effect on calcium, but scientiest mentioned that
those effects are very small hence can be eliminated with normal food.
Another study was conducted on 2001 and done by a team from Creighton
University Osteoporosis Research Centre. The scientiests observed
32 people for a month and partition them into 2 groups. The first group
were asked to drink many mixed soda
drink which contains various level
of caffeine, phosphorus, and citric acid. The second group was asked not
to drink softdrink. Then the scientiests took urine sample and measure
how much calcuim has been excreted out by each participants. As suspected,
participants who drink soda rich of caffeine excreted calcium, on the
other hand the other group is not. However, the level of excretion is
not significant.
Dr. Robert P.Heaney, the writer
of this study mentioned that the soda drinker usually has weeker bone
because they drink soda instead of other drinks which contains calcium,
such as milk and orange juice. The problem is not what the soda contains
of but what the soda does not contains of.
Soda has a small effect to the level of
calcium, however people who drink it has a high risk of having problems
to their bones. Hence it is advisable to drink others which have more
nutrition.
